About St. Petersburg


St. Petersburg was founded in 1703 by Tsar Peter the Great as a “window to Europe” and served as the Russian capital for more than two hundred years.
Today it is Russia's second biggest city with the most important Russian port on the Baltic Sea and among the cities of the world having populations of over one million people, St. Petersburg is the northernmost.
